Newborn Photography FAQ
1. When should I book a newborn session?
The best time to book your newborn session is during your second trimester to ensure date availability. However, please don’t hesitate to reach out even if you’re further along or your little one has already arrived. I always do my best to accommodate last-minute bookings as well!
2. Why do you photograph newborns between 5-14 days old?
I recommend capturing newborns in the first two weeks for those beautiful, curly, sleepy poses we all adore. Babies at this stage are still in that “newborn” phase where they sleep a lot and retain that curled position from the womb, making it easier to create those precious, tucked-up poses. After about two weeks, babies begin stretching out more, and they become more alert, making the session flow a little differently. But even if you’ve missed that window, I can still capture stunning images – an older baby just might need more wrapping and swaddling to keep them cozy.
3. How do you plan a session date when due dates aren’t exact?
Great question! I pencil in your due date as a placeholder, allowing flexibility, because babies come on their own time. Once your baby arrives, just send me a quick text, email, or call, and we’ll lock in the exact session time to fit within that optimal newborn period.
4. Are siblings included in the session?
Absolutely! As a mom of four, I understand the importance of capturing those first moments with big brothers and sisters. We’ll start with family and sibling photos so everyone is fresh and excited. Feel free to bring a second car, so one parent can leave with the older kids if needed after these family shots. Don’t worry about your little ones’ ages – I have plenty of tricks to get the perfect picture, even if they’re feeling shy or wiggly!
5. Can parents be in the photos with the baby?
Yes! I highly encourage parents to get in the frame with their newest little one. These photos are just as special for you as they are for your child, capturing those first tender moments together.
6. How long do newborn sessions take?
Newborn sessions typically last between 2-3 hours. I take cues from your baby to ensure they’re comfortable, happy, and safe. This allows time for feeding breaks, soothing, or resetting if needed (especially if hiccups decide to make an appearance!). I keep the session calm and relaxed, with baby’s comfort as the priority.
7. What should I bring to the session?
Just you and your baby! My studio is stocked with a wide variety of props, blankets, wraps, and headbands for boys and girls. If you have a special item, like a handmade blanket or a keepsake, feel free to bring it along, and I’ll incorporate it into the session.
8. What about props for the session?
Before the session, we’ll chat about any colors or props you’d like to incorporate. I offer a range of options, from timeless neutrals to props that can match your nursery decor or even celebrate the season. Feel free to browse my portfolio, and if there’s a specific prop you love, let me know, and I’ll do my best to include it!
